I am on week 12 of my "How to Revise Your Novel"
course by Holly Lisle and I will soon begin making cuts and changes to my
manuscript. My revelation this week is that I am in full control my story. You might say,
"Well yeah, duh!", but I never really thought about me being in control of
the story. As I wrote it, it just flowed. It seemed to write itself most of the
time. I never had to stop and say, "Ok, what do I want to have happen
now?"Now that I am revising, I see spots that can be changed or
reworked. I see opportunities to change characters and add extra conflict that would make the story better. The story wrote itself, but now I get to pull in the reigns and tell it where it needs to go. That's pretty cool.
Onward!
I think it's one of those things that people hope will just happen magically when you write, but taking charge of a story and shaping it the way you want is a very appealing part of the process, I think.

The Funnily Enough
It is. I am looking forward to the revising part of the process.
DeleteYee-Haw! Herd them little dogies!
ReplyDeleteThat's great! You take control of that novel girl! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Krista! I'll sure try!
DeleteYes. That is very cool.
ReplyDeleteHi Shelly! Thanks.
DeleteWeek 12 huh? I'm going to have to check out that course. It sounds like exaclty what I need.
ReplyDeleteErin, I highly recommend the course, but make sure you have enough time to devote to it. I work full-time and some weeks, I work every evening on the revising homework and sometimes all day Saturdays. I am determined, though to get each week's lessons done that week. You can take months to do one lesson (it is self-paced), but I don't want to be revising the rest of my life. LOL.
DeleteLet me know you have any questions about how the course works...if you are interested.
