I like the idea of sketching out the scene. I do this when I'm doing an action one. It's the only way I can get it right and make everyone else understand.
I think the little details make scenes come to life. I have a folder of pictures I use as references images when I need inspiration for a setting or when I'm describing a piece of machinery or clothing. I don't usually need a lot, just one small tidbit that gives credibility to the fact.
I think that looking to your ms from a different perspective is really important but so hard to do. Once you're on a roll, all you can see is what you've been seeing for months, so the only way I've found that actually works for me is to let rest the ms for months. And i mean MONTHS. Then it's a little easier to shift gears and note things that I'd let slip before. Nice advise.
