  1. I want to a seminar a while go where the speaker taught us that within the first 500 words must show the main cahracter, thier age, and thier problem.

  3. I'd like to read some of those- it has obviously worked! Good post idea. I'm currently re-reading Pride & Prejudice, it has the classic opening line " It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife".

  5. There are two books with opening lines that grabbed me before anything else could.

    1. Voyage of the Dawn Treader- "There once was a boy named Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it."

    2. Silent in the Grave- "To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband’s dead body is not entirely accurate. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching upon the floor."

    I LOVE a great opening line. It often sells the book for me.
