A to Z Devotion: S is for Speak

"Do not speak evil against one another, brothers..." James 4:11 (ESV)

"Do not grumble against one another, brothers..." James 5:9 (ESV)

I am guilty of "speaking evil". I've talked about people behind their backs. Even as the words came out, I knew I was wrong, but once I start, it is hard to stop. How can I say that I love people if I speak against them and judge?

Father, help me! I don't want to speak evil. I want to speak life. Help me turn to You in prayer, instead of speaking negatively. Put a guard at my lips. Help me turn negative conversations into positive ones. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Do you speak life? What helps you resist gossip?

  1. We are all guilty of gossip or speaking ill of others at one time or another, I'm sure. What keeps me on the right track is remembering how I would feel if I were being talked about and the biblical admonition that we're to build each other up. Of course the Bible is full of instruction on how to live, and most of it goes against our nature.
