A to Z Devotion: U is for Urgency

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left."

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." Matthew 24:36-44

Urgency, or the lack of it, has been on my mind a lot lately. I struggle with this in prayer, for example, thinking I'll pray tomorrow because I am tired. Or, I put off leading a Bible study because, haven't I done enough lately? I have to keep in mind that we are running a race. Today could be my last day in the race. How will I report to God? "Uh, sorry, Father, I felt like resting this year." Or, will I say, "Father, your Word and Spirit led me and I obediently followed you!"

Yes, life is urgent if you are a Christian. What is God urging you to do?

What speaks to you about urgency?

  1. I just saw your blog on the A-Z list. I hope you are enjoying the challenge. I have found that some of these letters of the alphabet are hard. :)

It is true...the day of the Lord's returning is approaching. The Lord has given us work to do. It is interesting how we are instructed to both work and to rest...to move forward and to wait, and these things can look differently in differently in each of our lives.

The one thing in my life that is urgent is my need to draw near Him. There a hymn that comes to my mind. It is called "I Need Thee Every Hour". I believe that if we will practice drawing near the Lord in prayer and in Bible Study we will be able to hear Him more clearly and have more power to do the work He has given us to do.

  3. Agree with Theresa. Urgent to draw near to Him. Also urgent to share him with others. And to trust Him and live with less (my words for 2014 and 2015, respectively.

    1. Susan, I feel an urgency with church. I want so much for them to prioritize with God as their all in all. I keep praying.
