Writing Junk

Trying something new today. Sometimes I feel like my blog is too sterile...too on-topic. I love doing the writing exercises, but sometimes I want to share more about myself, but because I feel like I have to stick to "writing exercises", I don't. I love to read blogs that share honest feelings and personal stories; Blogs where you get to know the writer and a feeling of friendship emerges.  Can my blog be like that too?

So, today. It's just me. No writing exercise.

I'll begin.

Hi, I'm Dawn (hmmm...this is awkward).

Ok, I'll try again with a title and a photo of myself (maybe that will help).

Writing Junk (my title...I think this will work)

It's me, Dawn. I'm just going to write some junk about me. It might will be random (my daughter loves that word).

This is my funny four eyes photo. Above my head is one of my favorite words, "dream". Under the word (and behind me in the photo) is my bookshelf. Dreaming goes with books, don't you think?

I love books that take you to a far-away or magical places. I just finished the most wonderful book, Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer. It is about a girl who goes to sea disguised as a boy.  I was happy to be sailing with little Mary "Jacky" Faber! Can't wait to read his next book, The Curse of the Blue Tatoo! Good stuff to dream by!

So, what books do you like to read and why?

  1. I like witty humor, with a bit of adventure or mystery thrown in. But some of my favorites are YA fantasy (Shannon Hale is one author I can think of that I really love).

  2. Just started the Golden Compass. Not my usual fare - and I'm loving it!

  3. Hi Dawn, I love your eyes photo - very funny and cool. Lately I've been reading Louise Penny mysteries - they are like curling up in a chair with a blankie and a cup of cocoa on a rainy day - pure escapism. Also wanted to say that for a while I thought I had to write about "writing stuff" all the time, but what I really want to do is write about what interests me or what I'm thinking about. And I always try to write it well - as well (almost) as if I was going to submit it someplace. So for me, it's almost always a writing exercise too.

  4. Hi Dawn, the beauty of our blogs is that it can be anything we'd like it to me. I love reading all kinds of books. Just finished up The Sunday Morning Wife this weekend.

  5. My favorite author is Mary Higgins Clark. She writes murder mysteries. I also like Nicholus Sparks and James Patterson. I enjoy suspense and mystery novels the most.

  6. Thank you all for your comments! I appreciate your feedback and sharing what books you like.

I'm going to try to be less strict on my blog and go with the flow.

  7. Although I still enjoy fiction, I seem to have moved into a non-fiction stage of life. Non-fiction always has a way of wrapping up right when it should. Sometimes fiction writers don't know when to stop telling the story.

Second to that is historical fiction. Because I like to learn while I read.

  8. Lucy, Good point on non-fiction. When the story is done, it's done. :0)

  9. Lately I've been reading Vince Flynn; his character Mitch Rapp is interesting.
But your blog can be different things.

  10. I'm more convinced than ever that we shouldn't limit our blogs. Like I said, I'm reading Writing Down the Bones and she explains writing practice like this -
Writing practice embraces your whole life and doesn't demand any logical form: no chapter 19 following the action in chapter 18. It's a place that you can come to wild and unbridled, mixing the dream of your grandmother's soup with the astounding clouds outside your window. It is undirected and has to do with all of you right in your present moment. Think of writing practice as loving arms you come to illogically and incoherently. It's our wild forest where we gather energy before going to prune our garden, write our fine books and novels.

To remind myself, I put part of this quote in the 'about me' portion of my blog.
