Attributes of Writers - H

Writers are a special breed. We have unique qualities that help us make music with our words. Those same qualities might also put us in the loony bin, but isn't it worth it?! So, pull up a chair, let's explore our "specialness" together through the A to Z Challenge. If we can understand our attributes as writers, we can be cured, right?                   Dawn (P.S. Thanks for stopping by. Writing is lonely and I need your company!)

Writers are...

Hunchbacked
Often found bent over paper or laptop

I feel hunchbacked after hours of writing. I forget to take breaks. I forget to stretch and I pay for it later with a sore neck that takes days of heat packs and massaging to set straight. I now set a calendar pop-up to remind me to stretch.

Do you feel hunchbacked? What do you do to prevent sore muscles?

  1. I work on the computer all day and I do feel very hunchbacked (I love the picture). I do pilates sometimes and what I find best, is to put a small ball or crunched up towels between the shoulder blades when you life on the floor and then just extend the arms to the side and breath...stretches everything out.

    1. I need to try that! Sounds like it would feel so good.

  2. To prevent a sore neck, I see a massage person and I always have an ice pack handy. Plus, I cut hair to pay my bills. So does this make a double-hunchback?

    1. Shelly, I love massages! Wish I could afford them more.

And yes, you are a double-hunchback...sorry. LOL.

  3. I use a weights machine in the mornings which seems to help loosen up my shoulders before I get to the writing. Sometimes it makes no difference though, if the muse strikes and refuses to let go then there is nothing to be done and afterwards I beg my husband for a shoulder rub :).

  4. Oh I have to take breaks! I rest my eyes, hands and wrists, neck and back. I will cruise around and go outside for fresher air, do something around the house, make sure I am moving. Sitting for long periods of time, doing repetitive tasks is unhealthy! www.sandysanderellasmusings.blogspot.com

    1. Sandy, you are so right. I just get so focused, I forget to stretch, etc. It's good you take breaks often!

  5. All the time! Once in a while I'll get up for more coffee, but that's the extent of my "exercise." LOL

    1. Dana, You sound a lot like me. Reach for coffee, type, reach for coffee, type...that's exercise, isn't it?!

  6. If you can make it work, a standing desk (or something you can repurpose as one) really helps. I use a bookshelf of an appropriate height and just plop my laptop on top. It's also handy for folks who like to pace as they think. You can pace all around the room, brainstorming your next paragraph or scene and end up back at the desk full of ideas.

    1. Sandy, Thanks, friend! I love this series, there was no stress to "teach" like my past A to Z challenges. This time was just for fun.

  9. Yes!! I put my laptop on my coffee table most of the time and bend over to use the mouse because the keypad annoys me sometimes. We can definitely be a bit hunchbacked. :)

  10. I'm loving your theme. I can't wait to find out what else you have to say about those weird writers. :) I do try to get some exercise whenever weather permits. I try to jog/walk 4 miles at least 4 times each week. But I can't get myself to do Pilates or weight lifting or stretches--which would also be very good for the muscles, posture, and flexibility. Stopping by from the A-Z. I'm your newest follower.
